In a striking and symbolic demonstration, hundreds of determined Nigerian protesters, including members of the Obidient Movement and pro-democracy groups, stormed the National Assembly complex today carrying mattresses, pillows, and survival kits.

The action, part of the #OccupyNASS campaign, signals their readiness to camp out indefinitely until lawmakers restore and retain mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results in the ongoing Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The protesters, joined by prominent figures such as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, accuse the Senate of attempting to dilute critical electoral safeguards by removing the "real-time" clause from provisions on electronic result transmission.

They argue this change could undermine transparency and open the door to manipulation in the 2027 general elections.

Brandishing placards and chanting demands for accountability, the demonstrators transformed the usually bustling legislative premises into a scene of peaceful but resolute civil action.

The unusual sight of protesters armed with bedding rather than weapons underscores their commitment: "We are prepared to sleep here until our voices are heard," one participant declared.

Civil society organizations, including the Kukah Centre and Yiaga Africa, have issued a two-week ultimatum to the National Assembly to finalize amendments that preserve real-time electronic transmission, warning that failure to act could erode public trust in Nigeria's democratic process.

This creative protest highlights growing frustration among Nigerian youths and citizens over perceived efforts to weaken electoral integrity. Organizers emphasized the demonstration's peaceful nature while vowing to sustain pressure for reforms that ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.
