In a significant development underscoring the deepening partnership between the United States and Nigeria in the fight against terrorism, multiple U.S. Air Force cargo aircraft, including C-130J-30 and C-17 models, have arrived at the Maiduguri Airbase over the past several days.

These landings signal the start of a new era of intensified security collaboration aimed at bolstering Nigeria's counterterrorism efforts, particularly against insurgent groups such as ISWAP and Boko Haram in the northeast region.

The initial flights, which began arriving as early as Thursday night, February 12, 2026, carried critical equipment, logistics, and ammunition to support ongoing operations. By Friday evening, at least three aircraft were observed at the base, with personnel offloading supplies.

Reports indicate that additional C-17 transport flights are expected in the coming days and weeks, establishing a steady flow of support to key locations across Nigeria, with Maiduguri serving as a primary hub due to its strategic position in the theater of operations.

This deployment aligns with the arrival of the first wave of approximately 200 U.S. military personnel, including intelligence analysts, advisers, and trainers.

These forces will provide targeted training, intelligence sharing, and technical guidance to Nigerian armed forces, while emphasizing that Nigerian troops retain full command authority and operational control.

The initiative builds on longstanding bilateral security ties, including previous U.S. support through Foreign Military Sales programs and joint efforts under frameworks such as the Multinational Joint Task Force.

A U.S. Department of Defense official described the current activity as "the vanguard of what will be a stream of C-17 transport flights," highlighting the commitment to enhancing Nigeria's capabilities in countering violent extremism and improving regional stability.

The Government of Nigeria welcomes this strengthened partnership as a vital step toward decisively addressing the security challenges in the northeast and protecting civilian populations.

The enhanced cooperation is expected to improve operational effectiveness, promote adherence to international humanitarian standards, and contribute to lasting peace in affected communities.
