Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler clarifies earlier comments, texts Mikel Arteta to express huge respect and admiration for Arsenal’s work

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hürzeler has stated that Arsenal will fully deserve the Premier League title if they go on to win it this season, describing the Gunners as one of the most impressive teams in the division.

Speaking ahead of Brighton’s Premier League fixture against Sunderland, Hürzeler addressed recent discussions surrounding his post-match comments following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory at the Amex Stadium on March 4. He confirmed that he had personally contacted Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta via text to clarify his position.

“I’ve texted Arteta. I have huge respect for him, one of the top managers in the Premier League,” Hürzeler said. “I love to see them play and I admire a lot of elements of what they are doing. My comments were nothing personal.”

He added: “I will be the first one to congratulate Arsenal when they win the Premier League, because if they win it, they will definitely deserve it.”

Hürzeler emphasised that while he stands by his principles and opinions formed in the heat of competition, his remarks were never intended as a personal attack on Arsenal or their manager.

“There were things that made me emotional. I am a person that sticks to my principles… and it created a lot of noise,” he explained. “But overall, like I said, I admire his work and we are still in a good exchange. Therefore, I wish him and Arsenal all the best.”

The German coach’s comments come as Arsenal sit at the top of the Premier League table, chasing a first title since 2004.
