In a powerful display of solidarity transcending political affiliations, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu joined other dignitaries today at the National Mosque in Abuja for the Janazah (funeral prayers) of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, the mother of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

Hajiya Umma El-Rufai passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, where she had been receiving medical treatment. Her death was announced by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai. The late matriarch was laid to rest at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja following the prayers.

Atiku Abubakar, who personally announced his attendance via his official X handle, stated: “Today, I joined family, friends and associates of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and the extended El-Rufai family at the Janazah (funeral prayer) of the matriarch of the family, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai. Amin.” Other notable attendees included Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, governors from Niger and Gombe States, and former Kano State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The gathering at the National Mosque highlighted a rare moment of unity among Nigeria’s political class during a time of personal loss. Videos and photos circulating on social media captured the leaders exchanging greetings and participating in the solemn Islamic funeral rites, underscoring the respect commanded by the El-Rufai family across divides.

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was granted temporary release from ICPC custody on compassionate grounds to enable him to attend the funeral rites and be with his family.

In this moment of grief, the attendees offered prayers for the repose of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai’s soul, seeking Almighty Allah’s forgiveness, mercy, and eternal peace for the departed, and strength and comfort for the bereaved family. “Atiku Abubakar: 'In this hour of grief, I stand in solemn solidarity with the El-Rufai family...'”

The El-Rufai family has expressed deep appreciation to all who stood with them during this difficult period.

The Janazah prayer and subsequent burial brought together political leaders, family members, friends, and associates to honour the life of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch.
