Following the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV expressed profound concern over the ongoing escalation of violence in Iran and across the Middle East. On the ninth day of intensified military operations involving U.S. and Israeli forces against Iran, the Holy Father warned that the conflict risks spreading further, potentially drawing in other nations and plunging the region into deeper instability.

"Deeply troubling news continues to arrive from Iran and the entire Middle East," Pope Leo stated. "Alongside episodes of violence and devastation, and amid a widespread climate of hatred and fear, there is growing concern that the conflict could spread and that other countries in the region, including beloved Lebanon, could once again sink into instability."

The first American-born pontiff, who has repeatedly called for peace since the outbreak of hostilities, appealed directly to all parties involved to halt the cycle of destruction.

He emphasized that true stability cannot be achieved through force or threats. "Faced with the possibility of a tragedy of immense proportions, I make a heartfelt appeal to all the parties involved to assume the moral responsibility of halting the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable abyss," he said.

Pope Leo urged an immediate cessation of hostilities, praying that "the roar of bombs may cease, that weapons may fall silent, and that space may be opened for dialogue in which the voices of peoples can be heard." He entrusted this intention to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, asking for her intercession for all those suffering due to the war and for hearts to be led toward reconciliation and hope.

The Vatican continues to monitor the situation closely and renews its commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts that prioritize human dignity, justice, and peaceful coexistence.

The Holy See stands ready to facilitate any initiative that could lead to de-escalation and lasting peace in the region.
