Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has highlighted the importance of resilience, commitment, and balance in both public service and family life, drawing from her extensive experience in politics.
Speaking to All Progressives Congress (APC) women leaders, the First Lady reflected on her distinguished 12-year tenure as Senator representing the Lagos Central Senatorial District, during which she actively participated in legislative duties while maintaining a strong and enduring marriage.
“I played politics for 12 years and still my marriage with President Tinubu did not go in tatters,” Mrs. Tinubu stated. “You can do both. You can have the best of both worlds.”
The First Lady, who has been married to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since 1987, encouraged female politicians to prioritize grassroots mobilization, mentorship, and effective representation while ensuring stable homes and raising responsible children. She emphasized that strong family foundations are essential for national development, linking societal challenges partly to parenting amid economic pressures.
A seasoned politician, pastor, and former First Lady of Lagos State (1999–2007), Oluremi Tinubu is recognized as one of Nigeria’s pioneering female legislators, having served three terms in the Senate. Her remarks underscore the possibility of thriving in demanding public roles without compromising personal commitments.
President Bola Tinubu and the First Lady continue to serve as a symbol of partnership in leadership and family values, inspiring many across the nation.
