Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has safely returned to Abuja after effectively representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government, alongside the 30th AU General Assembly, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 14 and 15, 2026.
The summit, themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” brought together African leaders to advance continental priorities on sustainable water management, enhanced sanitation infrastructure, and the broader developmental objectives of the African Union's Agenda 2063.
During the summit, Vice President Shettima actively participated in the high-level plenary sessions of Heads of State and Government.
He also engaged in several high-profile side events and conducted bilateral meetings with political and business leaders from across the continent. These interactions were focused on bolstering Nigeria's diplomatic ties, economic collaborations, and strategic partnerships in support of shared African progress.
Notably, Nigeria, through Vice President Shettima, reaffirmed its commitment to key continental reforms, including advancements in peace and security architecture, institutional strengthening, democratic governance, and health security sovereignty.
The Vice President emphasized Nigeria's readiness to collaborate with other African nations to foster self-reliance, particularly in building resilient healthcare systems capable of addressing the continent's needs independently.
The Office of the Vice President commended the fruitful engagements, which underscored Nigeria's pivotal role in driving African unity, development, and collective solutions to pressing challenges.
Vice President Shettima expressed appreciation to the African Union, the host government of Ethiopia, and all participating leaders for the warm reception and productive deliberations.
He reiterated President Tinubu's dedication to Nigeria's active leadership within the AU framework for the benefit of all Africans.
