The Abia State Government, in collaboration with the family of the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, today held a grand state burial in honour of the revered Nigerian evangelist, preacher, and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA).
The solemn ceremony took place at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, beginning at 10:00 a.m. It drew dignitaries, clergy, political leaders, and thousands of mourners from across Nigeria and beyond to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Africa’s most influential Christian leaders.
Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, born on January 7, 1945, in Asaga, Ohafia, Abia State, passed on to glory on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80. A dynamic international evangelist with over six decades of ministry, he was celebrated globally for his powerful preaching, crusades, and humanitarian works that touched countless lives. His ministry, headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, extended across continents, making him a towering figure in the Pentecostal movement and a spiritual father to many.
The state burial followed earlier funeral rites held in Akwa Ibom State, including the reception of his remains at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo and a memorial service at Victory Cathedral.
His body was subsequently escorted with honour across the Akwa Ibom Abia boundary by the Deputy Governor of Abia State, reflecting the deep respect accorded to the cleric by both states.
Speaking on the occasion, Abia State Government officials described the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai as a pride of Abia State and a man whose life of faith, integrity, and selfless service left an indelible mark on the nation. The government noted that organising the state burial was a fitting tribute to his immense contributions to spiritual development, peace, and societal progress.
Family members, church leaders, and associates paid glowing tributes, describing him as a “general of the faith” who fought a good fight and finished strong.
The event featured hymns, powerful testimonies, sermons, and prayers, underscoring his enduring legacy of salvation, healing, and empowerment through the Gospel. The burial proceedings continued with interment activities in his hometown of Asaga, Ohafia, in Abia State.

Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai was a distinguished Nigerian cleric, international evangelist, and author known for his dynamic crusades and deep commitment to the Great Commission. He founded the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association and remained a respected voice in global Christianity until his glorious transition.
