The Federal Government has signalled plans to review the national minimum wage, stating that the current ₦70,000 benchmark no longer fully reflects prevailing economic realities.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, made this disclosure on Thursday at the Good Governance Summit 2026 organised by Working People United (WoPU) in Abuja.

Gbajabiamila reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers, noting that the ₦70,000 minimum wage signed into law in July 2024 represented a significant milestone  more than doubling the previous ₦30,000 rate that workers had endured for years.

“This administration has delivered a new national minimum wage. Recognising that the cost of living does not stand still, the President reduced the strategic review cycle from five years to three years, so that wages may keep closer pace with economic reality,” Gbajabiamila stated.

He added: “The ₦70,000 wage, which was a milestone in 2024, must be honestly reassessed against today’s realities. I can confirm to you that when the time comes to begin the process of reviewing the national minimum wage, this administration will approach that endeavour not as an adversary of labour, but as a partner.”

The Chief of Staff emphasised that the Tinubu administration remains dedicated to partnering with organised labour to ensure workers’ wages keep pace with economic conditions, while continuing broader efforts to stabilise the economy and reduce the cost of living for all Nigerians.

This planned review underscores the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and its ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for Nigerian workers and their families.
